Male Rhinoplasty Beverly HillsYou probably think that men, who consider getting a “nose job” (rhinoplasty), are narcissistic celebrities. In fact, nothing could be furthest from reality. You’d be surprised to find out that that your geeky next-door neighbor and hard-working colleagues at the office probably have undergone a rhinoplasty. Regular guys no longer hesitate in getting a rhinoplasty when they are not happy with their noses. After all, in our competitive work environment and social scene, wanting to have balanced and well-proportioned features that reflect our dynamic and strong inner selves makes sense. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, of the estimated 14.6 million cosmetic procedures performed in the United States in 2012, about 1.2 million were performed on men.

The reasons for surgery vary from patient to patient. Often there are functional, as well as aesthetic reasons that men undergo rhinoplasty surgery. For example, nasal injuries as a result of sports injuries; both the function and the external features of the nose can usually be returned to their pre-injury state through rhinoplasty without further changes. In some cases, improvement to patients’ breathing by fixing the deviated septum and structures around it can make a major difference in the quality of sleep and overall well-being. Nonetheless, changes for purely aesthetic purposes are frequently sought by men, and this type of male rhinoplasty is increasing.

There are numerous scientific studies that suggest that we all make a rapid assessment of people’s faces and use that information to make a decision about their behavior, character and intentions. Accordingly, it’s hardly surprising that with accessibility and advancements in cosmetic plastic surgery, the desire to improve our personal appearance has entered mainstream society, appealing to people from all walks of life, including men. Considering how prominent noses are in our faces, and how they affect how we look and are perceived by others, men who are not happy with their noses are not bashful about contacting a plastic surgeon. It’s not about trying to be classically handsome or looking like someone else; instead, it’s about having a nose that is harmonious with the patient’s character, lifestyle and overall appearance.

We all know that an attractive appearance not only makes us more self-confident, but it also tells the world we take care of ourselves. Wanting a better version of our noses goes hand-in-hand with a culture that focuses on well-being and good health. In my practice, many male patients, particularly the baby boomer generation, may find the need to stay competitive in the workplace with a refreshed appearance. Divorced or widowed men find cosmetic surgery an ideal option for a confidence boost for returning to the dating arena.

And we are not talking about getting a dainty nose or going for a cookie-cutter look; instead it’s about having a nose that enhances our appearance and balances our other facial features and physical type. I have found in my practice that most patients are not looking to achieve a conventionally handsome face. Men are embracing strong features like ethnic, non-traditional noses, and even those who want a smaller nose, don’t necessarily go for a standard look.

On the other hand, in lieu of full-on rhinoplasty, many patients are balancing their naturally big noses with chin implants (which have recently spiked by 71 percent, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons) or opting to have their noses trimmed back.

Patients are even learning that facial surgery can now be fit into the tightest of schedules. Instruments have gotten smaller, which means incisions are smaller and heal faster. In conjunction with rhinoplasty, sometimes patients want a micro-liposuction which can clean up their slack jawline, or a chin implant to create a stronger, more masculine jaw.

Many patients are relieved to learn that getting a rhinoplasty is within their means. Surgery time varies but it could last from 30 minutes to a couple of hours depending on the work to be done. While recovery time depends on the complexity of the procedure, Dr. Bublik’s Los Angeles / Glendale / Burbank / Pasadena male rhinoplasty patients are relieved to learn that generally they will have to hide at home for only a couple of days, and that the post-operative discomfort is quite manageable.
